[Buddha’s words] Benefits of thinking about death [Easy and easy-to-understand life Buddhism]

法話

Hello, this is Oshyo!

It has been a monk at a temple for the last 12 years.

This time, I will explain the “merits of thinking about death”.

From Buddha’s words and my point of view, I will explain it in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.

The order is [Conclusion ▶ Explanation ▶ Summary].

Conclusion: Knowing death makes your heart lighter

There is something I want to check first.

Don’t forget that it’s not the “merit of dying” but the “merit of thinking about death” … Excuse me.

First of all, I have a question.

Have you ever thought about your own death?

In general, thinking about and talking about death is taboo.

It’s a theme that makes you feel depressed and difficult to handle.

I myself am not a person who can speak well about death.

However, if you are alive, you may think about your own moment of death several times.

Is it wrong to think about death at such times?

Shaka started Buddhism in India 2500 years ago.

Even in this era, there were people who wondered what it meant to think about death.

Mr. Shaka answered such a question as follows.

Shaka
Shaka

Death will surely come.

Being aware of this fact,

Letting go of your existing desires and memories will make your heart feel better.

Below, I will explain the meaning of this word ↓

Commentary: The arrival of death and the lightness of the heart

When asked what it means to think about death, Mr. Shaka answered in detail as follows.

Death will come to you

The time will come when your body will collapse and death will come.

There is something I need to tell you before the time of the collapse comes.

Let go of the desire “I want it, I don’t have enough!” And rest.

Let go of the obsession with the memories you have accumulated from the past

Lightly, survive this moment without thinking about anything extraordinary.

That way, everything will be “OK”

Your heart will be very soft.

Ryunosuke Koike, “Super Translation: Buddha’s Words” (2011), Section 183

Summary,

・ You will surely die

・ We are always sticking to something

・ Let go of sticking and concentrate on living this moment now

・ Then your mind will be refreshed

It is the content.

Most things are painful

Most things are painful

We are always thinking about something in our lives.

It’s usually not a good thing.

I am full of anxiety about the future and whether I can stay as it is now.

If you do so, the impatience inside you will grow.

Impatience is a bridge to endless desires.

The desire to “want, not enough” just grows bigger.

Awareness of death to cut off suffering

No matter how uneasy it may be, death will always take everything away.

Accept this fact and live.

Then, I don’t see a clear reason why I should be worried.

No matter how much you worried, you will die.

There is no rule that we have to live unhappy.

Focus on one thing

However, anxiety and desires will germinate through the gaps in the heart.

At that time, let’s pay attention to living this moment now.

Anything is fine, such as your own body movements and breathing.

My recommendation is to concentrate on eating.

It is good to chew things and be strongly aware of the taste.

Meal is the moment when you can feel the fact that you are alive.

Then, there will come a time when you unexpectedly feel that you don’t need so much.

If you notice this, you can live lightly.

Summary

The “merit of thinking about death” is that knowing death makes you feel lighter.

We live every day while dealing with anxiety in our lives.

Then, because of anxiety, the desire to “want, not enough” grows.

Twice

It is effective to think about your own death in order to avoid this desire.

Death takes away all desires and memories.

Therefore, no matter how much we worry or want something, everything will be washed away.

We do not have a rule that we have to worry.

Be strongly aware that you are living this moment now.

Let’s pay attention to one action such as eating and breathing.

By doing so, you will be able to see what you really need.

Then, your heart will become lighter.
